Wal-Mart going Green

I read an interesting article today about Wal-Mart. I didn't know this , but according to the article , Wal-Mart is the largest private consumer of electricity in the world. That being said, they're trying to make their new super center stores much more energy efficient. Their goal is that by 2009, all new super centers built will be 25-30 % more efficient than their 2005 equivalents. That sounds awesome to me. They are cutting energy use through manly new lighting and AC technologies. Instead of a standard air blowing AC system, the new super centers will use roof based chillers to cool water and then pump that water through piping in the floor. A prototype store which uses this technology is currently being built in Las Vegas.

I like to see a very big company such as Wal-Mart investing in new energy efficient technology. They may be doing it for mostly economic reasons, but in this case everyones a winner. Hopefully other companies and stores follow suit.
